Linking the past to the future by planting trees today

We are planting oak-dominated forest stands on former agricultural land in the Eastern Carpathians. These meadows were used for centuries to produce hay, sustaining the lives of local communities and their livestock. In the Ciuc Basin, an intramontane basin, the oak-dominated deciduous forests disappeared completely, leaving only scattered tree specimens.

The planting site, where we are going to plant in the upcoming 2024 spring planting season, was covered by forest when a map dating back to 1769-1773 was drawn.

What we are doing is spinning back the wheel of time—planting deciduous forests on agricultural land that loses its value as small subsistence farms disappear.
