Happy World Mangroves Day

World Mangrove Day, officially the International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem, is celebrated every July 26. It was officially adopted by UNESCO in 2015 to raise awareness of the ecological, economic, and social importance of mangrove forests and to promote their conservation and sustainable management.

Why it matters

Mangroves are unique coastal forests that bridge land and sea, thriving in salty, muddy, waterlogged environments where freshwater meets seawater. Their distinctive stilt-like root systems make them:

  • Natural coastal buffers — shielding shorelines from erosion, storms, and tsunamis.
  • Carbon powerhouses — storing up to four times more carbon than rainforests, making them vital "blue carbon" ecosystems.
  • Biodiversity hotspots — providing nurseries for fish and shellfish, nesting sites for birds, and habitat for species from crabs to lemurs.
  • Lifelines for communities — supporting fisheries, timber, firewood, and ecotourism.

Our initiatives on mangrove conservation

We are among the leading mangroves conservation organization in Tanzania with more action oriented restoration activities that involves direct planting of mangroves propagules and establishment of mangroves orchards aimed at decelerating the deforestation status of mangrove forests in Tanzania especially along the shores of Indian Ocean in Tanga region.Thousands of mangroves trees have been planted by us and we still need World support to plant more through Tree-Nations platform.
