It is native tree that can easily grow in poor soil and it is drought resistant.
Species particularities
Prosopis chilensis is a small, deciduous tree with a rounded crown; it normally grows from 8 to 12 meters tall. It’s a plant of the tropics; it’s considered a common weed, it grows along roadsides, round habitations, on refuse dumps and in other disturbed habitats; in arid and semi-arid regions. It grows in South America, in central Chile, and northwestern Argentina to Bolivia and Peru. The seed pods contain a sweet, edible pulp surrounding the seeds; it can be used to make drinks. This species has a symbiotic relationship with certain soil bacteria and is able to fix atmospheric nitrogen; it’s used for soil stabilization and erosion control and it can be used in native reforestation programmes. A gum is obtained from the stems; it has been used as a substitute for gum arabic. The wood is fairly dense, durable to very durable; it’s used for parquet floors, doors, furniture and construction. The wood is excellent for both firewood and charcoal.
