It has the ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen with the help of symbiotic bacteria in its root nodules. This nitrogen fixation enriches the soil, benefiting neighboring plants. Species particularities
Leucaena leucocephala is an evergreen small to medium-sized tree with an open crown; it generally grows from 5 to 15 meters tall; the trunk is normally short and it can reach from 10 to 50 cm in diameter. Its native range is Mexico to Central America and it has been introduced in several countries in Africa. It’s essentially a tropical species requiring warm temperatures and it's very tolerant to droughts. It’s a fast-growing species, considered an aggressive colonizer of ruderal sites and secondary vegetation.
