Socioeconomic impacts (2021 & 2022) - Mnurwar & Padaidori, Indonesia

The socioeconomic impacts:  

MNURWAR planting site:

We are excited to report on two years of planting (2021 & 2022) at our Mnurwar planting site. We recently expanded this site from 34.9 hectares to 66 hectares as more space became available. The reforestation site has significantly impacted local livelihoods. Here ares some key highlights:

• A total of 600,000 total trees have been planted with Tree-Nation and other partners.
• This site employs an average of 26 employees per month.
• Employees work an average of 15 days per month.
• Projects at this site have created a total of 5,145 working days between February 2021 and January 2022.
• Women’s empowerment is a core principle and goal for us in Indonesia. At the Mnurwar site, 65% of the planting staff are women.

PADAIDORI planting site: 

We have almost  fulfilled the site planting capacity and established a young and healthy mangrove forest over the last 2 years (2021 & 2022).  Here ares some key highlights:
• 541,500 total trees have been planted so far with Tree-Nation
• This site employs an average of 31 employees per month
• Employees work an average of 15 days per month
• Projects at this site have created a total of 5,115 working days.
• Women’s empowerment is a core principle and goal for us in Indonesia. At the Padaidori site, 70% of the planting staff are women.

Monitoring activities will continue yearly at the Padaidori site for another three years to ensure the forest is growing properly.

Mangroves provide storm-surge protection for local residents. As trees grow along rivers and coastlines, their roots will anchor into the soil and absorb swells of water during flooding or storm events.

When mangrove forests are restored, communities are protected against extreme weather and habitats for marine life are revived. We began its reforestation program in Indonesia with a focus on the restoration of mangroves and tropical forests. By also establishing an agroforestry program, we are helping to promote food security among the community. The planting efforts have expanded rapidly as the leadership team mobilizes local leaders and engages planters to become part of the program. Through this project, meaningful employment and ecological restoration have once again been brought to the shores of Biak.
