Closing Impact Report Indonesia - Padaidori 2 planting site

We are excited to deliver the closing report on two years of planting at our Padaidori 2 planting site.

The Padaidori project site is located on a small island located to the east of Biak Island in Papua Province, the largest and easternmost province of Indonesia. The site was severely damaged by the 1996 Irian Jaya earthquake and subsequent tsunami, which laid waste to many coastal mangrove buffers, including those on Padaidori Island. We only planted native mangrove species including Avicennia marina, Rhizophora mucronata and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza across the reforestation site to properly restore coastal ecosystems. Both the government and local communities are in support of the long-term conservation and restoration of this area.

As of this report, we have fulfilled the site planting capacity and established a young and healthy mangrove forest. At this site, mangrove propagules were distributed to planting staff in bundles of fifty until the monthly planting goal was reached. This process helps ensure that planting neither exceeds nor fails to meet our targets.

Socioeconomic impact:

With your generous support, the Padaidori 2 reforestation site has significantly impacted local livelihoods.

• This site created 5,580 employment days for local communities.
• This site employed an average of 31 employees per month.
• Women’s empowerment is a core principle and goal for us in Indonesia. At the Padaidori 2 site, 70% of the planting staff are women.

With a steady income, our employees can put savings aside, invest in their households, start micro-enterprises to diversify their income opportunities, and provide healthcare and everyday needs for their families.

Additional significant socioeconomic impacts include improved diets and health due to purchasing nutritious food and increasing education as families can afford to send their children to school.

The Mangrove propagules were collected and organized at a nearby village.

What are the next steps?

We thank you for supporting the Padaidori 2 site through to its completion. This mangrove forest will provide many economic and environmental benefits to the surrounding area for years to come. Many of these trees will mature, producing seeds of their own and helping the forest return to the point of natural equilibrium.

Monitoring activities will continue yearly at the Padaidori 2 site for another three years to ensure the forest is growing properly.
