Tree-Nation's Latest Initiative: Mangrove Restoration in Kenya

We are thrilled to unveil our latest collaboration with the Mangrove Restoration Project in Kenya, initiated in September 2023. This endeavor is centered around the rejuvenation of mangrove ecosystems in the Mida and Mtwapa creeks, areas significantly impacted by climate change and degradation due to overexploitation and rising poverty levels.

The mangroves along Kenya's coastline in the Western Indian Ocean are under threat, largely due to escalating poverty which forces locals to rely heavily on the resources provided by the mangrove forests. This overreliance has fostered a cycle of deforestation, further exacerbating climate issues and biodiversity loss.

To counter this, their strategy is twofold: restore the mangrove ecosystems and uplift the local communities. Leveraging educational programs, they aim to foster awareness about the critical role of forest ecosystems while providing sustainable livelihoods through engagement in restoration activities. This approach encompasses the collection of propagules and planting them on the planting site.

Their primary goal is to restore and conserve the rich biodiversity of the Mida and Mtwapa creeks, thereby enhancing the health of the marine protected areas. This initiative not only aims to expand and improve the quality of the mangrove forests through an ecosystem-based approach but also seeks to alleviate poverty by creating job opportunities for the local communities.

We are set to kickstart this project with the planting of 10,000 trees across 1 hectare of land at the Kadaina site. This marks the beginning of a sustained effort towards mangrove restoration, involving continuous monitoring and conservation to ensure the success and growth of the newly planted areas.
