In our project in Tepelmeme, Oaxaca, the mezquite tree (Prosopis laevigata) stands as a symbol of resilience and transformation. Native to Mexico, the mezquite is not just a tree; it’s a living solution against desertification and an ally in the fight for environmental restoration.
The mezquite has an incredible ability to fix nitrogen in the soil, enriching its fertility and improving conditions for other plants to thrive. Its deep roots not only capture water from underground but also help reduce erosion and retain moisture in the soil—a vital resource in Mexico's arid areas. Furthermore, this tree serves as a nurse plant, protecting other species and contributing to the creation of microhabitats that enhance local biodiversity.
Why is it important to plant mezquite? This tree is a living example of how nature-based solutions can help combat climate change. By absorbing CO₂ and improving soil structure, the mezquite becomes an essential ally in mitigating the effects of global warming and protecting biodiversity.
