Brad Pitt’s Little Pink Houses From Above

Brad Pitt is famed for his hardman roles in blockbusters such as Seven and Fight Club. But the star has revealed a feminine side when it comes to architecture. He has built 150 bright pink houses – resembling lifesize Monopoly-board properties – for residents of New Orleans still homeless following Hurricane Katrina in 2005.He plumped for the unusual colour while filming in Louisiana last year. An insider said: "Brad sees the pink structures as a metaphor representing the future of renewed housing for those displaced by the recent disasters." In August 2005 New Orleans was ravaged by Katrina – one of the deadliest hurricanes in American history. Almost 2,000 people were killed and hundreds of thousands were left homeless as the city was flooded. The 44-year-old actor fell in love with New Orleans while filming The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button and moved there with his partner, Angelina Jolie, and their four children. He enlisted Los Angeles architecture firm Graft to come up with some affordable "green" housing for stricken residents while the city was being regenerated. The £2.5million development was built by 600 volunteers working for the star's charity Make It Right on the site of the Lower Ninth Ward – a New Orleans suburb wrecked by the flooding. Standing 5ft above the flood plain, the £75,000 homes are solar-powered and water-resistant. The charity is offering no-interest loans to potential buyers. Pitt teamed up with former President Bill Clinton last week to open the project officially. The movie star said: "The heart and soul of New Orleans are paramount to this project. "We're going to help 'make it right' with 150 sustainable, affordable houses so these people can live in beautiful, safe structures that respect their spirit and provide a good quality of life." Despite his love for the party-loving city, it is rumoured that his glamorous girlfriend is not so keen. The couple were said to have had a blazing row over his desire to tie the knot in their adopted city. Angelina, 32, who starred alongside Pitt in the 2005 film Mr & Mrs Smith, is apparently pushing for an intimate ceremony in France.
