Cutting down mature trees

I can’t get my head around people mentioning climate change, dreadful air pollution but yet fell lots of trees that are part of the ecosystem and filtering. Then when they want to build hundreds of houses and say as compensation , they will plant new trees elsewhere which will take a very long time to mature. What is your stance?

Sensitive subject , as TN sells carbon compensation 😅
... Native wild forests are the ultimate evolution of nature, with strong benefits on water management, biodiversity protection, etc.
An old tree stocks much more carbon than new ones (number of leaves), so is the soil where many tree species are mixed ...
We know that clear cutting is a big mistake, leading to soil erosion, then soil slippery ... water can't be stored anymore after that, and most implanted trees from nurseries can't find needed ressources and shelter in this new desert ...
This is just industrialisation of tree cutting, a way to make the heavy machinery profitable, and i think that we should ban this practice worldwide.

And a "tree field" will never be as good, for sure .. the best way is the nature's way, assisted regeneration (when you help increasing diversity and speed up natural migration of species, by implanting baby trees in existing forests).
Sometimes we also have to reforest deserted areas, we can do it by following natural steps from lichens to bushes to trees ...

Another issue, in France we build many electricity or heat generators from "wood waste" (actually entire trees mashed in big cruncher machines 😱) ... it's insane, but all products (heat, electricityor heating pellets) have a "green" or "durable" label ... 🤮
But we need construction materials as well, better use wood than concrete, right ?

So we have to be carefull on what processes we use, and what type of project we support ...
Here on TN you can filter and select projets that fit your values (forest or wildlife conservation, soil restoration, water management, agroforestry, social impact, etc).
For each project you can see planting sites, tree species selected, plantation strategies and techniques .. and teams announcements.

Hope you will find answers to your questions, and consider joining us in the (free to use) seeds game !
Take care 🙏🏼
