What is Mission Certification?


Tree-Nation operates two distinct carbon certification pathways: Foundation and Mission. Both sit within the same rigorous certification framework, but each is tailored to a different type of restoration system.


Mission Certification is built for projects where carbon removal is inseparable from ecosystem recovery. Rather than following a single, standardized planting model, Mission-certified projects restore landscapes through diverse species mixes, native and locally adapted planting systems, and approaches that integrate biodiversity, soil health, water cycles, and community engagement.


Impact is tracked through a combination of field data, geolocated evidence, satellite-based vegetation indicators (including the Enhanced Vegetation Index, or EVI), and long-term verification reports, keeping a conservative methodology to carbon sequestration measurements. 


In short: Mission Certification recognises that in many real-world forest restoration contexts, a healthy and resilient ecosystem is the carbon story. Learn more about our certification standards here.


Why Bear Groves in Transylvania?


Bear Groves in Transylvania has been part of the Tree-Nation platform since 2024. In just over a year, it has become one of the highest-scoring projects in our network — achieving a VQS (Verification Quality Score) of 99.2  in the 2025 evaluation cycle, well above both the European regional average (79.2) and the global average (78.8). That score jumped from 91.2 in 2024, driven by strong EVI results across planting sites and survival rates consistent with expected benchmarks for the ecoregion.


The transition to Mission Certification is a direct reflection of what both the on-site monitoring data and remote sensing analysis are showing: this is not a monoculture planting operation — it is a functioning, complex ecosystem restoration in progress. Here is what the evidence shows:


Diverse, native species composition


Across three active planting sites in Transylvania — Ciomad Volcano, Cheile Bicazului, and Ciomad Mountain — the project has planted 25,000 trees to date, using a deliberate mix of Norway spruce, European beech, Silver fir, Rowan, Sycamore maple, and oak species. This multi-species approach is designed to mimic natural forest succession, increase canopy resilience against wind and pest outbreaks, and support long-term carbon storage through a structurally diverse forest.


Strong survival and vegetation signals


Both active planting sites exceeded the 85% survival commitment threshold set in the project agreement. Satellite imagery from 2018 to 2025 at Ciomad Volcano shows an open pasture progressively giving way to early canopy development, with increased vegetation density also visible in the surrounding landscape — a sign of broader ecological recovery beyond the planted polygon itself. At Cheile Bicazului, high natural regeneration of birch (Betula pendula) and goat willow (Salix caprea) has been observed alongside planted seedlings, further indicating that conditions for forest recovery are actively improving.


Ecosystem complexity, not just tree count


The project includes active wildlife monitoring at all sites, with wildlife tracking data regularly updated on the platform. An increasing wildlife population observed across planting areas is one of the clearest on-the-ground signals that ecological conditions are genuinely improving — not simply that trees have been inserted into the ground.


Community integration


Seasonal employment for local residents in reforestation and monitoring, volunteer participation (including youth groups), and a focus on fostering sustainable ecotourism are all integral to how the project operates. This level of community embedding is characteristic of restoration systems that are built to last.


Adaptive land management


The project team has demonstrated a careful, science-informed approach to site management: non-toxic deer repellent applied biannually, organic fertiliser used in nutrient-poor soils at Ciomad, and annual mowing to control competing vegetation at Cheile. The ability to identify challenges — spring frost damage, wildlife browsing pressure, competing herbaceous growth — and respond with targeted, non-destructive interventions is exactly what robust ecosystem management looks like.


What this transition means


Moving Bear Groves in Transylvania to Mission Certification is not a change in the quality of the project,  it is a more precise alignment between the project's actual restoration model and the certification pathway designed for it.


Mission Certification is the right framework here because the carbon impact being generated in Transylvania is inseparable from the diversity of species being planted, the ecological processes being restored, the wildlife returning to the site, and the communities maintaining the land over the long term.


The project has certified 1,537.4 tonnes of ex-ante CO₂ offset to date, with a further 5,000 trees planned for 2026.

We will continue monitoring Bear Groves in Transylvania annually through Tree-Nation's Verification framework, combining remote sensing with monitoring reports submitted by the project team at key milestones over five years per site.
