First register of Dendrocolaptes picumnus in the Yungas of Tucuman

The biodiversity program is currently working on a few projects where they focus on different key groups in the forest. One of the projects in this program is focusing its eye on the birds present in the forest, while working with two ornithologists of the area (Proyecto Aves). 

This project consists of a seasonal monitoring for a period of three years, where Facundo and Giselle (the ornithologists in charge of monitoring), walk through the forest throughout three entire days, registering different species by sound or sight. Each day there is a morning, afternoon and nocturnal bird monitoring that lasts several hours each. We are halfway through the monitoring project and have identified up to 183 species in the project, some of these species are great indicators of the forests health, sometimes because of their mere presence and other times because of the abundance registered of certain species.

These lasts few monitoring periods, we registered Dendrocolaptes picumnus  (Common name: Trepador colorado), and the exciting news is that is the first register of this species in the yungas of Tucuman (Province). Though its conservation status is categorized as least concern in a global perspective, we are eager to understand its presence in the forest. This is great news for the scientific community, and have recieved recognition of this register from cientific institutions in the province. 

Weve uploaded this register in Ebird, by doing this we are participating in citizen science. We will surely be publishing this news in other scientific platforms in the near future. We are excited to share this news with the tree nation community, we will continue analyzing what this sighting means and if other individuals of this species appear.
