# The challenge of reforestation in Cameroon, a country faced with instability

Written by: Hugo Bitouzé, Head of Reforestation Projects. We are thrilled with the progress we've made in Cameroon, working alongside our local project,  Cocoa Farmer Agroforestry, to fund and plant 500,000 trees by August 2023. In 2022 only, the project trained 200 farmers and benefited over 11,112 families.This project is very particular due to its unique approach to reforestation through the forest gardens approach:Training: our local partner employs training staff to teach farmers climate-smart agroforestry practices. These practices emphasize the efficient use of resources and sustainable land management to enhance ecosystem resilience.Planning: Farmers, guided by the training staff, develop a comprehensive plan for their land, which includes creating a living fence, diverse layers of various tree types, and permagardens (a technique that harnesses natural processes for cultivation and adopts bio-intensive agriculture, a tactic devised to boost output on small portions of land for crop cultivation). Planting: Farmers plant 2,000 trees on their land and select the right species for the right purpose: fruit and nut trees, like Citrus x paradisi; fuel and timber trees like Lysiloma latisiliquum; fodder trees like Jatropha curcas. These trees not only contribute to reforestation efforts but also support the farmers' livelihoods.Implementation: Over a four-year period, farmers implement forest gardens, integrating trees with their existing agricultural practices. The living fence and tree layers provide protection for crops, prevent land loss, mitigate the adverse effects of flooding, and reduce soil erosion.Monitoring and support: Throughout the implementation period, training staff monitor the progress of the forest garden, providing guidance and assistance to ensure the success of the project. This ongoing support ensures that farmers can effectively adopt and maintain the climate-smart agroforestry practices.The forest garden methodology not only rejuvenates degraded landscapes, improves CO2 sequestration and household food security but also boosts income and generates further benefits for the community, developing a sustainable and holistic approach to reforestation. We are glad to say that we have achieved our target of 500,000 trees planted with this project, for which the planting site has been completed. The farmers will continue to care for the established forest gardens, ensuring the benefits persist. The project's comprehensive approach has yielded tangible results that motivate farmers to maintain and nurture their forests, which serve as sources of food, steady income, suitable habitat for their livestock, and protection from wild animals and intruders. Nevertheless, despite the project's remarkable achievements in improving both the environment and the community's quality of life, due to the ongoing instability and insecurity in Cameroon, we are not able to open a new planting site for the moment. According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reports, the North-West and South-West regions are facing ongoing challenges, including instances of violence, abductions, kidnappings, and property damage. This situation jeopardizes the project team's safety and restricts their ability to work in the field, prompting a pause until conditions improve.The farmers will continue to care for the established forest gardens, ensuring the benefits persist. The project's comprehensive approach has yielded tangible results that motivate farmers to maintain and nurture their forests, which serve as sources of food, steady income, suitable habitat for their livestock, and protection from wild animals and intruders. At Tree Nation, our mission is to support countries and regions in desperate need of reforestation. However, these areas often face challenges like armed conflicts, droughts, hunger, and other issues that limit our reach and the on-site activities of our local partners. Despite these setbacks, we remain steadfast in our commitment to finding new ways to achieve our goals and support vulnerable communities. Together, we will continue our quest to create a greener, more sustainable future for all.
