Project description

Responding to this context and knowing the potential of the land, this project has the purpose of implementing 16 hectares of agroforestry systems in small properties. In these systems, timber and edible species will be combined such as: nopal, maguey, pines, ailes and fruit trees.

With this project we seek to convert lands that were long used for milpas into forest while providing an alternative for agroecological production so that they are not left without receiving any food from the land. In addition to providing ecosystemic, agroecological and socioeconomic benefits .
The ecosystem benefits that are sought to be achieved through the implementation of a SAF are: the increase and protection of biodiversity, the improvement of water quality, the preservation of forests and the fight against desertification. The agroecological benefits we seek are: prevention of erosion, restoration of soil fertility, reduction of dependency on external inputs, water retention in the land, generation of microclimate, increase productivity and resilience of the productive system. The socioeconomic benefits are: the development of skills and knowledge of the participants, increase the income of the owners or holders of the land, increase the diversity of products per property for the participants to sell or take advantage of and an increase in the well-being of small products, and its near nucleus.
We are located on land within and near the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve, which is why we are promoting agroforestry practices that allow restoring the ecosystem while there is a use.
Over the past 3 years, we’ve collaborated with 20 ejidos in the Monarch Zone, allowing us to plant over 420,000 trees (50,000 in 2020, 100,000 in 2021 and 270,000 in 2022) covering a 600 hectares area.

In previous years we had worked with the communities where we are developing this project by planting the following trees.
San Lorenzo:
2020 - 9,195 pseudostrobus
2021 - 11328 pseudostrobus pine
2022 - 7,250 Devonian and 7,250 pseudostrobus pine.

As for Puerto Bermeo
2020 - 4,039 pseudostrobus pine
2021 - 8,930 pseudostrobus pine
2022 - 5,520 Devonian pine and 5,520 pseudostrobus pine.

In San Nicolás Tarimoro
2022 - 500 oyameles, 7,500 Devonian and 7,500 pseudostrobus.
(The community donated land and seeds for this year's plant nursery)

This year we are expecting to plant 500000 trees over 500 hectares.

One of our main commitments is the follow-up (12, 24 and 36 months) over the planted trees, because this allows us to evaluate the success of the plantation by keeping track of the tree´s evolution in a logbook. This information gives us important information such as: survival rate, growing rate, plagues or diseases.
