Beneath the moss and fallen leaves of the Eastern Carpathian forests surrounding the wind-damaged surfaces (one of our planting sites) lies a hidden world. After rain mushrooms appear overnight—fragile domes, coral-like clusters, or sturdy boletus—each a reminder of the immense, unseen life below. The mushrooms we see ( like these ones photographed in the last days in the Hasmas Mountains of the Eastern Carpathians) are only fleeting messengers, fruiting bodies of vast underground mycelial networks that bind the forest together. These invisible threads connect roots, trade nutrients between trees, and recycle the remains of last year’s growth into the humus of tomorrow. This is the network what the poor planted seedlings miss on an open field. Trees are not lone beings. They are linked together by the mycelial networks.
