Forest Gardens - Mount Elgon Region

From above, you can see how a single plot of land tells many stories at once. Rows of maize, patches of bare red soil being prepared, young banana plants, and the dense edge of forest — all coexisting on the same farm.

You can see the mix of crops and trees growing side by side—each one helping the other. It’s how farmers build healthy land that provides food, shade, and long-term balance.

Our project in Uganda focuses on agroforestry—and this farmer knows it well.
Here he’s showing us the results of his work, harvesting the fruits of how the Forest Garden approach has helped restore his land and improve his yields.

These are Charles’ children (see our previous post), who have grown up surrounded by Forest Gardens—learning from them and experiencing their many benefits firsthand.

Before joining the project, Charles struggled with low crop yields. Today, his land is thriving, filled with trees, diverse crops, and flourishing

In every country where we plant, we work with local nurseries to grow the right species for the environment—most of them fruit-bearing trees that support both people and biodiversity.

Seed collection from fully grown trees is vital for maintaining biodiversity, promoting reforestation, and ensuring the survival of native species.

Mature trees produce seeds that are naturally adapted to their environment, making them ideal for planting in similar conditions.

It’s always inspiring to see the results of our forest gardens—trees not only restore the land but also provide a rewarding harvest.

One little tree can make a huge difference. Every tree we plant with our farmers restores the land, captures CO2 and also provides nutrients for the soil to grow food for each household.

Nature-based solutions that work for farmers and their communities' needs are central to meeting nature-positive goals.

The harvest from a forest garden sustains families and enriches the soil, creating a cycle of growth and abundance. Each fruit, a step towards a secure future.
