Red spruce once dominated these high-elevation slopes before logging and fire cleared most of it out. What grew back was mostly hardwood, so restoration work now focuses on getting spruce seedlings back into the mix and giving the species room to reclaim the elevation it used to

Reforestation isn't just planting trees. On Oregon's National Forest, it means collecting cones, growing seedlings, planting on steep burned slopes, and coming back to monitor every step. It's a full cycle of work — and the forests that depend on it can't wait.
