This project supports under-resourced communities (ejidos) in restoring degraded forests. Hotter seasons, intensified rains, wildfires, and illegal logging have weakened forests, leading to thinning, soil erosion, and water depletion. The ejidos, as forest owners, lead tree planting and maintenance, with women often at the forefront, improving the resilience of the forests and preventing further human-caused damage.

During the past few weeks, we have had very little rain in Tepelmeme. When this happens during the early stages after planting, we carry out supplemental watering to help the trees through the dry period.

Besides providing water, this supplemental watering helps rehydrate the hydrogel

One of the keys to a successful planting is building tree basins correctly. In semi-arid regions like Tepelmeme, their size is essential to capture and retain as much rainwater as possible around each tree.

The basin must also be deep enough for the hydrogel, a polymer that absorbs

During our field visits, we have observed a good performance from our trees, such as this Lysiloma acapulcense (tepehuaje) which, after being planted last year, is now growing strongly in the semi-desert.

This species, native to the tropical dry forest, is well adapted to rocky

We continue carrying out monitoring activities across our plantations. As winter comes to an end, we enter the most critical time of the year for our young trees. The dry season and intense sun can place significant stress on recently planted seedlings.

During this period, we actively

The Invisible Superpower of Hydrogel

It doesn’t wear a cape or fly, but hydrogel is a true hero in our restoration projects. This magical polymer mixes with the soil and can retain up to 400 times its weight in water, releasing it slowly so roots never go thirsty.

Restoration Means Growing the Understory Too

As part of our restoration efforts in Tepelmeme, we’re not only planting trees. We’re also introducing shrub species to create the understory, an essential layer of any healthy forest ecosystem.

The understory helps enrich biodiversity,
