Our project aims to support the recovery of the Nation's 155 Forests and 20 Grasslands, managed by the USDA Forest Service, by addressing the impacts of wildfires and spruce budworm infestations. With tree mortality reaching 60-80% in some areas, we work to re-establish seed sources for future regeneration and enhance the forests' resilience to future infestations. The tree I contributed through this year's Hacktoberfest campaign is a Pinus palustris, an endangered longleaf pine which ranges across the southern US. It was supposedly planted in a valley west of Missoula Montana, where extremely cold winters are common. This seems very unlikely.

Conservation credit systems like tree-nation's reforestation projects are often criticized for greenwashing, loose accounting, and ineffectiveness. They're a useful lever, though, and issues like this degrade trust in your important work.

If this species was actually planted in this location, why? I'm genuinely curious. If not, please work on accurately documenting which species you're planting where. I'm feeling skeptical that my contribution was real.

Hi Annett. Thank you for your question! This concrete project aims to support the recovery of a Douglas-fir forest in the Shoshone National Park (from spruce budworm infestation), so here we will only be planting this conifer species. But very soon we are going to launch 2 new projects on TN with a wider range of species. Hope we could answer your question?!
