Sowing Water to São Paulo

IPE's project has been promoting great actions toward education and implementation of land use conservation and regenerative agricultural practices, changing cultural paradigms among regional producers and achieving plenty positive results.
Their very skillfull and motivated team are commited to the cause, implementing areas of agroforestry and silvopastoral systems, reforestation of landscapes inside Atlantic forest with excellence.
It's a pleasure to participate and contribute to this project, so relevant to the biome, producers and regional water cycle systems.

Trees for the future

The project coordinated by Dr. Alexandre Uezu from Instituto Ipê in Nazaré Paulista (SP-Brazil) is of great relevance, especially in these times when reforestation, recovery of forests, landscapes, soils and water preservation are so fundamental for the maintenance of the climate.
Forests and natural ecosystems store large amounts of carbon, in addition to harboring a large part of terrestrial biodiversity. The Atlantic Forest is one of the richest and most threatened biomes on the planet. Currently, the most emerging projects are the planting of forests.

Sowing water to São Paulo

I have been working in the Cantareira System since 2008. This system is formed for a group of several dams being responsible for the water suppling for more than 19 million people in São Paulo Metropolitan Area, and for that counts on one of the largest water transpositions between watershed. In recent years, reservoirs presented a reduction in the volume of stored water, caused by the lack of effective water resource conservation policies and by climatic instabilities. Besides, the land use change and occupation may affect negatively the appropriated aquifer recharge. This way, projects, as the "sowing water" must be encouraged and supported in order to promote the revegetation of priority areas for water recharge, and implementation of conservationist management practices in the agricultural, pasture, forestry, plus the unpaved roads, factors that will act towards water and sediments volume reduction carried direct to rivers and increase water infiltration into the ground.

Research and action in Cantareira System

The Sowing Water project has been developed for over ten years in the area of the Cantareira System's, in the Atlantic Forest biome. During this period, the project has promoted numerous initiatives to integrate research and action in the search to build strategies for the conservation of natural resources. From an interdisciplinary perspective, the project uses instruments that allow for analysis on a larger scale of the landscape. Building understandings of the conditions of the real landscape, it focuses on priority areas to promote concrete actions regarding the use and management of soils, water and forests in private rural properties. In addition, the project has become a link of a wide network of social actors that act in favor of environmental governance in the context of the Cantareira System.

Applying the scientific knowledge in real world decision making

The work led by Dr. Alexandre Uezu of the NGO IPÊ is of great relevance, since it applies the newest scientific knowledge in the management of real landscapes. By involving the different local actors, who empower themselves with scientific knowledge, they are together building more sustainable and resilient landscapes. By restoring large tracts of the Atlantic Forest, one of the richest and most threatened biomes in the world, and in a particularly complex, biologically rich, and relevant location for the provision of ecosystem services, the IPÊ team achieves great results. This results are not only relevant for the local communities, but also, for the millions of people that are supplied by the waters of the Cantareira Water System.

Therefore, I highly recommend this project.

Dedicated work relevant to a strategic region

This project led by the researcher Alexandre Uezu of the NGO IPE has contributed to the conservation of soil, water and biodiversity in a very impactful biome in Brazil and also in a strategic region for the country. It considers, in a multidisciplinary way, the recomposition of the forest, taking into consideration soil science, hydrology and human sciences. To propose to perform beyond the technical field work, scientific work and environmental education demands management skills, knowledge and teamwork, which I consider efficient for such. I support this serious and dedicated work, necessary for the environment and people.

Incredible experience!

What an amazing experience!
We had an ecological restoration volunteering in Brazil, an initiative carried out by IPÊ Institute, for which CHEP donated 6,000 tree seedlings from the Atlantic Forest.
The event was attended by our employees and customers.
The feedback received by our guests was very positive! It was an incredible experience!
May we carry out more actions like this one with IPÊ, which generate benefits for the environment.

Planting trees can do help with the quality and water supply!!!

The last year I had the opportunity to visit the project through my masters degree program, and also because my thesis it is placed on the Cantareira System of water resevoir. My project is about the dinamics of land use and land change and forest ecossistems. I was impressed about the work they have done in the area, and with the comunity, involving the environment and the social, integrating education, conservation, governance, research, conservation of biology and landscape management focus on the water suplay. The impact this project has on the target area, already can be seen, the farmers who participate are so proud of the work they have done in their property, and everybody knows the project and this reputation is helping engage more, for sure will make a huge difference in the future, when we will be facing the climate change.

The Sowing Water Project: The hope for the future of the Cantareira System

I got to know the Sowing Water Project during the field expeditions of my master's project and I was amazed by its results and the commitment of the group in the Cantareira System region. Environmental education activities are carried out in schools, reforestation and training of rural landowners for more sustainable production systems, in addition to the group having a great role in social, political and environmental debates in the region. Linked to practical action, the Sowing Water Project also has a strong scientific base and, thus, several partnerships are made with educational institutions to contribute to the project's performance and it is in this scenario that my research project fits. My study aims to contribute to the maintenance ecosystem services related to water, based on the understanding of how the flow and production of sediments vary over time for different land use contexts in the Cantareira System watersheds. The results of this research will contribute to the generation of scientific knowledge and to the application of better management strategies in the region for the Sowing Water Project and other actors, aiming at an environment that is resilient to climate change.

Major Positive Environmental and Social Impact

IPE is extremely successful in it's challenge to protect and improve the water that serves Latin America's biggest city: São Paulo.
Their whole team is dedicated in sharing their knowledge with the local community and contribute immensely with the supplies needed.
I was lucky to know them back in 2014.
Since then they helped us change the way we rise livestock, in such a way that we no longer need to use any kind of herbicides. It also stopped all sorts of erosion.
A part from this, they supported us in restoring all native plants around water supplies in our property. They granted us with all the trees and materials necessary to build the fence to protect them.

Knowledge and ability to execute

I am the owner of a small farm in Camanducaia city, Minas Gerais - Brazil, which participates of the Ipê Institute's ´Sowing water´ program. Since 2019, when I arrived, I have been advised and supported by the entire Ipê Institute team in the sustainable development of my property, through several courses, support for the most varied doubts and, more recently, in the planting and monitoring of an area around 2 acres of native trees from the local ecosystem, carefully selected to monetize forest conservation. I am so grateful for what they do for my property and planet.

What can I say about IPÊ and the Sowing Water project?

" Well, I’ve known the project since 2014, when I was invited to participate in a meeting for educators, a training course on the importance of the Cantareira System, the protection of headwaters in agriculture areas through rotational systems for raising cattle and ecological restoration with planting of native trees. The project always addresses environmental education, helping local municipal teachers with training and guidance for the development of environmental education projects in schools. In addition, it actively participates in training outreach assistance to rural producers in the municipality in which I work (Mairiporã - SP). The project is also a partner in environmental education actions for planting native seedlings in specific actions, with students from municipal schools. IPÊ is also working in partnership with various government institutions to develop an integrated conservation plan for the Alouatta guariba red howler monkey in the Continuous Cantareira. I can only thank the entire team of the IPÊ Institute and the Sowing Water Project, for all their contributions to our municipality and partnership during all these years."

A good beginning for us, starting farmers

My family and I attended the courses and workshops offered by the project Sowing Water, in which we also participated in the planting of native trees that integrate ecological pastures in our region. During the courses we learn much more than rules and procedures about water and forest conservation. We learn that it’s possible to protect nature and have a viable production at the same time, without any harm to the environment. The experience was very important for the planning of our own property in Nazare Paulista, in Sao Paulo State, with the assistance of the project’s specialists. We are very grateful for the opportunity to transform our land and sow a better future for us all.
