TanzaniaOur project employs a unique agroforestry approach that benefits local farmers and the environment. Monoculture and logging have degraded the land and left farmers reliant on a single source of income. So far, over 700 farmers are using the Forest Garden approach to rebuild food systems, improve livelihoods, and restore the environment. CO2 per species is rounded to 50kg, as this project is twinned with VCS credits.
Not every tree in a forest garden earns its keep the same way. Some are grown for fruit or income, others for shade, soil health, or structure that lets the whole planting function as a system rather than a single crop.
Some trees in these systems are chosen to produce fast, often bearing fruit within the first year while slower-growing trees are still establishing.
That quick turnaround gives farmers income early on, which matters when a planting also includes species that take years to mature.
One of the less visible outcomes of forest gardens is what ends up on the table. Intercropping vegetables alongside trees means the land produces food year-round, not just at harvest time. These local varieties — grown within the garden system — are part of what makes the model practical
