Forest Garden Program

Forest Garden Program, Senegal

Our project aims to create sustainable forest gardens by partnering with local farmers. In a region needing rejuvenation, we train 500 farmers in sustainable land management, develop tree nurseries, and plant 2,000 trees per farmer, for a total of 1,000,000 trees. This initiative not only restores the land but also ensures food security and generates income for the farmers. The project has been recognized with the World Restoration Flagship Award

A Solution to 3 problems at once

This project relies on the power of the Forest Garden, which is truly incredible. A Forest Garden helps solve three huge problems all at once- hunger, poverty, and climate change! As thousands of trees are planted on each farm, they help cool and rebuild the soil, retain water for longer, and bring nutrients back to the farmland. That means that crops grow better, for longer, and that you can plant a wider variety! The trees themselves also bear fruit and nuts and fodder for the animals. This system provides each farming family with more food and of higher quality. By the 3rd year of the project, families in this system report a 708% increase in nutritious food! They also have more and diverse crops to sell at market, which raises their income. Last but not least, those thousands of trees are actively capturing carbon in their wood, roots, and in the soil they help rebuild, which helps stop climate change.
Please support this amazing project! You can learn more at www.trees.org

Forest Gardens for the Future

I absolutely love what Trees for the Future does with their Forest Garden program. It is a fantastic model that manages to address multiple global crises at once: hunger, poverty and environmental degradation. I am heartened to learn about and see the efffects this work is having on people, communities and the planet. And I hope this idea continues to spread around the world.

Wonderful project to prevent hunger

I love that this project is helping farmers become more sustainable and resilient from climate change while they help restore the environment.
Planting trees while diversifying their crops allows for the soil to regenerate, biodiversity to heal, all while not depending on one crop.
When they plant one crop, farmers face the risk of having no revenue for an entire year should that crop fail.
The Forest Garden approach takes that risk away while the farmers enjoy an increase in revenue and a safer source of nutritious food.

Supporting local farmers while replanting

Fantastic project working to plant 1 million trees! In addition to that supporting farmers build their livelihoods and enhance the whole region.
