Community Forest Sowing

Community Forest Sowing

GN Guinea
Completato

This project, together with the local NGO Guidre uses a mix of 40 local tree species as mixed plantations are more sustainable + proven to fix more CO2. Seeds are collected by local farmers. Valuing their forest assets promotes agroforestry practices. Seeds are coated with a natural mixture to protect them from insects until the rainy season, then seedballs are dispersed by direct sowing. Nature choses which will germinate (min. 500 trees xha)

Descrizione del progetto

The arboRise project in cooperation with the local NGO Guidre aims to reforest in a participatory way, involving the people directly concerned. arboRise is aimed at families in bush villages who own one of the 40 species chosen in the project (because biodiversity guarantees sustainability)

These trees produce seeds that nobody uses today. Our approach is participatory: arboRise pays these families for harvesting the seeds from their tree. In addition to providing them with a supplementary income, rewarding them for harvesting the seeds from their trees can encourage them to protect their trees.

Working with families is also an opportunity to make children aware of nature conservation, through the example set by their parents.

The seeds are used to reforest areas that have become deserted due to deforestation. The idea is also to rely on local skills. On the one hand, the seeds are coated with a mixture of clay and charcoal (the "seedballs" concept inspired by permaculture) to protect them from insects and rodents until they germinate in the rainy season. On the other hand, the land for the direct sowing of the seedballsis directly chosen by the community which guarantees their full implication in the project

This short circuit reduces the number of intermediaries between the sponsors and local families.

As a Tree-Nation sponsor you will know exactly which family you have helped and which plot of land you have contributed to reforest. arboRise is ideally suited for citizens and companies in high-income countries who want to fight global warming and at the same time provide important support to some of the poorest families in the world, and a respectful incentive to care for their forest heritage.
