Amazon Windshields

Amazon Windshields, Bolivia

92.8  VQS Score

Our project aims to combat deforestation in the Bolivian Amazon through innovative agroforestry solutions. The region is losing vast forest areas to agriculture, requiring creative approaches to balance farming and conservation. By planting tree windshields between fields, we create a grid that boosts crop yields on less land, prevents wind erosion, and improves biodiversity, water quality, and social well-being while reducing the carbon footprin

Key elements
Project activities
Reforestation
Reforestation
The project is planting trees to re-establish forest cover in an area of forest that has been deforested.
Agroforestry
Agroforestry
The project is planting trees on agricultural land for multiple purposes, including the agricultural use of trees, combined with agricultural crops and/or livestock.
Environmental benefits
CO2 capture
CO2 Capture
The project holds ideal characteristics for carbon sequestration (CO2 offsets). This include a tropical climate zone, fast growing wood species, certain type of forest and project management.
Fauna conservation
Fauna Conservation
Animal species protection is a part of the plantation management, such as creation of safe habitats.
Land restoration
Land restoration
The project repairs degraded land back into a healthy and productive land.
Social benefits
Poverty relief
Poverty Relief
The project creates employment opportunities for poor local communities and reduces exposure and vulnerability to extreme weather events.
Environmental awareness
Environmental awareness
The project cultivates environmental education for adults and/or children to raise environmental awareness.

Tree-Nation Methodology

Project description

Our primary mission is to combat deforestation by planting trees at a faster rate than they are being cut down. This requires us to work tirelessly in the field with farmers and other stakeholders. While farmers are often blamed for deforestation, we firmly believe that trees can be their allies, not their enemies. As a result, we work to convince farmers to join us in our efforts to plant trees.

Together with farmers, we have developed a unique tree planting system that combines windshields (windbreakers) and agriculture. This model allows farmers to increase the value of their land, boost their farming yields, and enhance water conditions, biodiversity, soil fertility, and reduce erosion. We provide continuous technical support with a team of experienced field technicians who are capable of helping with tree plantation, maintenance, and agricultural matters.

Our planting system has been a great success, and many farmers have voluntarily adopted it long before it became a regulation. As a result, we have been able to plant over 3.5 million trees, covering an area equivalent to 4,000 hectares (40 km2), which is approximately the size of Jersey City or Bilbao in Spain. Over 200 farmers and communities are currently benefiting from our trees, and farming yields have increased by an average of at least 12%.

Our work has also contributed to reducing forest fires and creating a positive impact on carbon, water, social, and biodiversity footprint. We are committed to continuing our work in creating a better environment for future generations. Our success lies in finding a profitable synergy between farmers, agriculture, trees, and the environment.
