Project description

This conservation project is endorsed by the United Nations' Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) framework and its certified by VCS in their Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standards (CCB) Gold program, by supporting land use projects in addressing climate change, benefitting local communities and smallholders, and conserving biodiversity.

The verification of carbon is conducted by the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), while the Climate, Community, and Biodiversity (CCB) standard guarantees significant socio-economic advantages. The project is a collaborative effort between forest carbon leaders, ERA-Ecosystem Restoration Associates Inc. and Wildlife Works Carbon LLC.

This VCS project is connected to a Tree-Nation reforestation project where we plant trees. Through this, we make sure that we never offer CO2 offsets without having trees planted. While new-planted trees are already included in the Tree-Nation certification and the Plan Vivo certification, this is not the case for the VCS certification. This is why we supplement our sponsors´ offset with newly planted trees in selected reforestation projects.

The Mai Ndombe REDD+/CCB Gold Project, situated in the western part of the DRC in Africa, is dedicated to conserving 248,956 hectares of forest from threats like commercial logging, uncontrolled fuelwood gathering, and slash-and-burn farming.

The Mai Ndombe REDD+/CCB Gold Project utilizes carbon offset revenues to achieve the climate, community, and biodiversity objectives listed in the Impacts and Benefits section. The implemented activities have stopped logging, reduced unsustainable farming methods, improved education, increased nutrition, improved infrastructure, access to markets, and significantly advanced health care.

By safeguarding this forested area, the Mai Ndombe REDD+/CCB Gold Initiative contributes to the reduction of carbon emissions and the conservation of habitats for wildlife. Additionally, the initiative will offer socio-economic advantages to the neighboring communities, such as employment opportunities and access to potable water. Through fostering a sustainable economic model, the initiative seeks to elevate the quality of life for community members while ensuring environmental protection.
