Descrição do projeto

This conservation VCS project is endorsed by the United Nations' Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) framework and its certified by VCS in their Climate, Community and Biodiversity Standards (CCB) program, by supporting land use projects in addressing climate change, benefitting local communities and smallholders, and conserving biodiversity.

The project is connected to a Tree-Nation reforestation project where we plant trees . Like this we make sure that we never offer CO2 offsets without trees. While new-planted trees are already included in the Tree-Nation certification and the Plan Vivo certification, this is not the case for the VCS certification. This is why we supplement our sponsors´ offset with newly planted trees in selected reforestation projects.

The Tumring REDD+/CCB Project is situated on the southwestern boundary of the newly proclaimed Prey Long Wildlife Sanctuary. Spanning around 66,645 hectares, it's nestled in Cambodia's heartland, west of the Mekong River. The Prey Long Wildlife Sanctuary boasts Cambodia's largest expanse of lowland evergreen forest and is a significant segment of the Indo-Burma Hotspot, gaining recognition as one of the planet's 34 paramount biodiversity epicenters.

Acting as central Cambodia's primary watershed, the Prey Long Wildlife Sanctuary controls water and sediment delivery to the Mekong River and the Tonle Sap Lake. This watershed system is vital for approximately 700,000 Cambodians, offering them irrigation.

The Tumring REDD+/CCB Project has outlined two primary action points:
- Enhancing livelihoods, and
- Curtailing forest clearing and timber extraction by local inhabitants.

These actions target communities situated within and near the project's vicinity.

For the purpose of enhancing livelihoods, the project envisions increasing the size of the community ranger team, also the project will provide training sessions focusing on advanced agricultural practices.

To diminish forest clearing and logging, the project endorses the establishment of "Community Forests" within the project’s realm. Here, the local community, in collaboration with the Forestry Administration, forms Conservation Agreements. Under these agreements, communities commit to safeguarding the forest in return for heightened local jurisdiction and forest administration. The Forestry Administration will also undertake initiatives to enhance conservation awareness and sensitivity among the community.
