Our project aims to restore mangrove forests along rivers and coastlines, addressing the large-scale loss of these vital ecosystems. Launched in 2018, it helps local communities who depend on these forests by planting and maintaining trees while providing long-term employment opportunities. Additionally, Tree-Nation adds to all trees the same CO2 of VCS certified projects.
Most mangrove monitoring happens on foot, at low tide, moving row by row through the mud. Walking the site lets the team spot stress signs early: yellowing leaves, exposed roots, or seedlings knocked over by tidal flow, issues that satellite imagery alone won't catch. It's slow,

Field
The long shaped pods hanging from these branches are propagules, and they're already alive. Unlike most seeds, mangrove propagules germinate while still attached to the parent tree, growing a root before they even drop.

This stretch of coastline in Ivaguelani, Mozambique, shows what mangrove loss looks like from above: open mudflats and cleared patches where a dense tangle of roots used to hold the shoreline together.
Thousands of mangrove seedlings have been planted here to help rebuild that root
While satellite images show the bigger picture, this is what that progress looks like up close: a young mangrove standing in the mud, its leaves full and green.

These two satellite images show our planting site in Ivanguelani, where we planted over 500,000 mangroves back in 2024. In 2021, you can see large patches of bare mud still visible between the channels. By 2025, that same ground is covered in green.
Planting and follow-up care in
Same site, a few years later. Mangroves grow fast when conditions are right, and the coast here has responded well. The canopy you see in the background was knee-height not long ago.
Mangrove planting is a bit different from what most people picture. You work at low tide, directly in the sediment, pushing propagules into the mud by hand. It's simple, effective, and the whole community gets involved. This was one of those planting days, a few years back.
The deep greens, the waxy surface, the new growth pushing through — these are signs that the trees are absorbing nutrients, managing salt, and adapting to their tidal environment.

Mangroves grow slowly and deliberately — first anchoring into tidal mud with their root systems, then gradually building the dense canopy that coastal ecosystems depend on.
What starts as a single propagule becomes a self-sustaining
This Avicennia marina was planted in 2022. Three years in the salt mud of Mozambique and it's already pushing past 50cm. Not bad for a species that has to survive tidal flooding, salt stress, and scorching heat. 🌱
The work behind the work
Reforestation isn't just planting. It's coming back months later, walking the terrain, counting every tree, mapping every plot. Our Mozambique verification visit showed what we hoped — strong survival rates and healthy growth across the sites.
Past the fragile seedling stage, these young mangroves are now anchoring soil and expanding their root networks with each tidal cycle.
Combining native mangrove varieties to restore natural structure, protect shorelines, and rebuild marine habitats — each species chosen for its ability to anchor sediment, tolerate shifting salinity, and create shelter for fish, crabs, and other coastal life.
This young mangrove is in its first stages of growth. With its initial leaves already formed, it’s beginning the slow process of establishing roots and adapting to tidal conditions.
