This project supports under-resourced communities (ejidos) in restoring degraded forests. Hotter seasons, intensified rains, wildfires, and illegal logging have weakened forests, leading to thinning, soil erosion, and water depletion. The ejidos, as forest owners, lead tree planting and maintenance, with women often at the forefront, improving the resilience of the forests and preventing further human-caused damage.

Some people are simply indispensable to a project. Mari is one of them. She asks questions, challenges ideas, makes proposals and, above all, gets things done. As a member of the Tepelmeme Ejido, her commitment and energy have been essential in moving many aspects of our project

During the past few weeks, we have had very little rain in Tepelmeme. When this happens during the early stages after planting, we carry out supplemental watering to help the trees through the dry period.

Besides providing water, this supplemental watering helps rehydrate the hydrogel

🌱 The trees we planted this year to strengthen our restoration efforts are already beginning to adapt to their new home.

The first few days are critical. The trees leave behind the protected conditions of the nursery and begin adapting to the soil, climate, and water availability

One of the keys to a successful planting is building tree basins correctly. In semi-arid regions like Tepelmeme, their size is essential to capture and retain as much rainwater as possible around each tree.

The basin must also be deep enough for the hydrogel, a polymer that absorbs

Today we're loading the trees that we'll be planting throughout the week. Little by little, we continue strengthening our project through tree replacement and working toward thoughtful ecological restoration.

Great days await us in Tepelmeme!

The Oaxacan Mixteca is home to extraordinary biodiversity. Beyond the trees and plants we seek to restore, this region supports wildlife that plays a vital role in healthy ecosystems.

Among the species found here are the puma (pictured above),

Rain Arriving at the Right Time

In Tepelmeme, we have recently experienced rainfall that is unusual for this time of year. In a tropical dry forest ecosystem, where dry months dominate much of the calendar, any off-season precipitation brings relief to the landscape and directly

During our field visits, we have observed a good performance from our trees, such as this Lysiloma acapulcense (tepehuaje) which, after being planted last year, is now growing strongly in the semi-desert.

This species, native to the tropical dry forest, is well adapted to rocky

We continue carrying out monitoring activities across our plantations. As winter comes to an end, we enter the most critical time of the year for our young trees. The dry season and intense sun can place significant stress on recently planted seedlings.

During this period, we actively

🌱 Nurse Objects: Innovation in Restoring Degraded Ecosystems

In degraded areas lacking mature trees to serve as nurse plants, we employ nurse objects—physical elements such as rocks, fallen logs, or polycarbonate structures—to replicate their essential functions. These objects
