La forêt deKONZA GREENS TREE NURSERY

Konza Greens is a commercial tree nursery. The promoters of this ‘Green Business Enterprise’ are cognizant that the increasing global awareness of climate related risks presents a business opportunity to develop products and services to green the environment and mitigate the impact of climate variability while making some revenue. Konza Greens Nursery undertakes to propagate suitable tree seedlings for planting mainly in public schools and sell the surplus to local communities among other customers. The biggest environmental tragedy in the areas around Konza and its environs were our tree nursery is located is the rapid diminishing of tree cover as a result of rampant cutting down of the native trees and shrubs by local communities essentially to extract firewood and charcoal without any remedy for restoration of the destroyed flora. Our project is therefore focused in the promotion of tree planting initially targeting public schools in order to restore the destroyed environment and moderate weather variability in the school-learning Institutions. It is envisioned that, a good tree cover will not only contribute in restoration of the environment, but also improve the learning atmosphere for learners in beneficiary schools. In particular, large-stature trees will moderate temperature extremes and improve air quality in targeted public schools. Indeed, the establishment of tree canopy in compounds of learning institutions will further aid in carbon sink, minimize air pollution and heat-related illness among other benefits. Lastly, school pupils in such institutions will grow knowing the value of trees and how to plant and nature them to maturity. Therefore, our engagement with schools promotes the culture of planting trees to increase green cover in school compounds, provide shade and to clean and cool the air in schools. Finally, it is envisaged working with school students will also indirectly encourage local communities (where the students spend their free time outside school), to start tree plantations in their own fields to restore the environment and meet their daily firewood supplies among other needs.
