Preservation of Mt. Elgon Ecosystem

Preservation of Mt. Elgon Ecosystem, Ouganda

Our project works with over 54k local farmers in the Mount Elgon region to grow trees and build sustainable livelihoods. Uganda has lost at least 12% of its tree cover since 2001, threatening both the environment and local communities. By focusing on forest restoration and reducing the need for logging and unsustainable agriculture, we work to reverse this trend and protect the land for future generations.

Transforming the Forest

Mt Elgon is an important water catchment area for Uganda and Kenya with important biodiversity values. The forest on Mt Elgon is also a source of agricultural land, timber, fuel wood and other forest resources for local communities. This project has been influenced local people’s motivations for forest clearing, the impacts of local forest use, including as a source of fuelwood and bees preservation. I found that METGE project with the local forest uses strongly influenced forest structure, even where people had a collaborative management it's help limit agricultural encroachment and improves livelihoods.
