Thanks to a kind donation from Tree-Nation corporate sponsors, we were recently able to take a group of local schoolkids on a 2 day 'Forest Learning' trip to our community forest centre in Boré. Primary schools are not particularly well resourced in Kenya so pupils seem to spend a lot of time doing repetitive 'learning by rote' tasks so it was really nice to be able to take a big bunch of them out of the classroom and into the local forest for a range of exciting activities, for a change.
The trip started off with a theory learning session in the communal lecture space about the key role that of tropical forests play in keeping the planet cool and the dangers to the local forest that come from excessive charcoal burning. According to the IPCC, we wont defeat climate change unless we also defeat tropical deforestation so its vitally important that these kids understand that they need to be the custodians of their trees, for all our sakes.
Then everyone went on a guided forest walk that took in some tree identification...

Then it was back to the centre for a slap up lunch. Some of these kids wont get lunch every day so we made sure this one was a bit of a feast!
Lunch was followed by some tree planting
..and then the trip home in our project Land Rover with Michael Jefwa - a great teacher and one of our best tree planters.
All in all this was a special time for some special kids - Asante Sana, Tree-Nation!
