We are currently reforesting the native ecosystem known as Yungas, in the Argentinian province of Tucumán. The Austral Yungas or “Selva Tucumano-Boliviana” are mountain forests in the northwest of Argentina. It is one of the richest forest formations in our country, characterized by its high biological diversity and by its protective role in the retention of soil and water. These forests are currently considered as one of the most susceptible natural systems to human intervention, and their preservation is an international priority according to WWF.
Unfortunately, the Yungas have been affected by the aggressive advance of the agricultural frontier, as well as by the expansion of urbanized areas without appropriate planning and the uncontrolled exploitation of tourism. This jungle has many valuable species for the wood industry, and the area we are working on has mainly suffered from this industry. During the selective logging, the industry takes the tallest and finest specimens of certain species, wiping out the main structure of the top stratum of the forest.
In 2002 we began this project with an environmental and social strategy. The aim was to conserve and restore the forest in order to recover the richness of the ecosystem. Since the beginning of the project, we have planted approximately 100,000 trees, of which 70,000 live in an area of 300 hectares. All the species we plant belong to the top stratum of the forest, trying to restore the structure that was removed.
We have also introduced an initiative to plant native fruit trees in the understory. This project not only contributes to the ecological recovery of the forest but also provides tangible resources for nearby communities. By fostering a sustainable relationship between people and nature, we aim to create long-term benefits for both the ecosystem and the local population.
Aims of the project:
- To recover the upper layer of the forest, improving the quality of the ecosystem services.
- To enhance the value of the native forest.
- Quantify and maximize the carbon sequestration of the native forest.
- Identify the richness of the present biodiversity, in particular of endemic and endangered species.
- Involve the local community promoting social development.
The team is integrated by committed people, who work in an interdisciplinary way to carry out the project.
