This programme enables UK communities to plant native trees in their local public spaces. At just 13%, the UK currently has one of the lowest rates of tree cover in Europe. Working across the UK, this project will increase tree cover, absorb carbon from the atmosphere, and provide vital habitat for local wildlife. It will also provide a vital community link - therefore encouraging both biodiversity and local communities to flourish once more.

Project description

This programme aims to create multiple small-scale tree planting projects across the UK. These may take many forms, from community woodlands, orchards, hedges, roadside trees, 'food forests' and many more. The communities here are in charge as much as possible and they get to decide what is best for their local area.

Using just native tree species, these projects will increase tree cover, boost local biodiversity, and rekindle community interactions in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic. To ensure community ownership over the projects, these will be designed and run by the community groups themselves. Where possible, local schools will be involved too, providing a hands-on education site for local children.

Communities are very well-placed to manage these projects. Not only do they make this idea scaleable across the country, they also help to ensure high tree survival rates. Having willing community members on-hand is vital when the trees need watering during a drought or re-mulching in the years following the initial planting.
